A brief history of Spring, TX

Behind the lush greenery and diversity of Spring, Texas has a rich history that laid the foundations for what the CPD is today. Back in the 1800s, Spring used to be a railroad town. In 1836, the large geographical area that would become present-day Spring was placed by the Texas General Council in the municipality of Harrisburg. Two years later, a merchant, farmer, and legislator named William Pierpont put a trading post on Spring Creek. The town only had 153 residents, however, by the middle of the 1840s, immigrants from Germany started to move into the town.

Along with themselves, they introduced farming. People started planting cotton and sugarcane on top of a myriad of vegetables. Aside from the German immigrants, people from the Southern U.S., particularly from Louisiana, decided to move and settle in Spring. Over the next three decades, the town would see growth and development.

By 1871, the town inaugurated the International and Great Northern Railroad. The railroad featured a route that took people from St. Louis, Missouri to Palestine, Texas. The opening of the railroad also paved the way for Spring’s expansion. Two years later, the town would receive its post office.

The next few years saw the creation of different schools, churches, cotton gins, and grist mills. As the 1900s began, another monumental development came about. The International and Great Northern Railroad now connected Spring to Fort Worth, Texas. From 153 residents, the town’s population grew to 1,200 by 1910.

In 1980, Old Town Spring shopping area opened. The spot featured restored houses that attracted the interest of even more newcomers. At the close of the decade, the Spring area registered over 33,000 residents.

In addition, the town became home to the Goodyear America airship from 1969 to 1992. It became a major tourist attraction for the town, as residents and outsiders can see the hangar off Interstate 45. Though the blimp left Spring in 1992, you can still see the hangar’s concrete foundation at Lowe’s Home Improvement Center.
